Moving into a new home is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming. With so much to do, it’s easy to forget important tasks that can make your move-in process smoother. To help you out, I’ve compiled a list of must-do tasks that you should prioritize from utilities to unpacking.
Set up Utilities
One of the first things you should do when moving into a new home is to set up your utilities. This includes electricity, gas, water, internet, and cable. Contact your utility providers and schedule installation or transfer of services in advance. This will ensure that you have electricity and other essential services up and running before you move in (The Spruce).
Deep Clean Your New Home
Before you start moving in your furniture and belongings, make sure your new home is thoroughly cleaned. Deep clean your floors, walls, windows, and countertops, and make sure that your kitchen and bathroom are sanitized. If you’re short on time or prefer to have a professional do it, consider hiring a cleaning service (HGTV). But, I would definitely do these two things first:
- Clean out the kitchen: If the previous occupants wanted to skip on some of their cleaning duties when they moved out, the kitchen is where they probably cut corners. Wipe down the inside of cabinets, clean out the refrigerator, clean the oven, and clean in the nooks and crannies underneath the appliances.
- Steam clean the carpets: It’s good to get a fresh start with your floors before you start decorating. The previous owners may have had pets that left stains and smells you may not have noticed before. Take the time to steam clean the carpets so that your floors are free of stains and allergens. It’s pretty easy and affordable to rent a steam cleaner—your local grocery store may have them available.
Change the Locks
Changing the locks should be a priority task when moving into a new home. You never know who may have a copy of the old keys. Changing the locks will give you peace of mind that you’re the only one with access to your home (Real Simple).
Unpack Essentials First
When it comes to unpacking, it’s best to start with the essentials. This includes bedding, toiletries, and kitchen items. Unpack these items first to ensure that you have everything you need for your first night in your new home. Then, take your time to unpack the rest of your belongings at your own pace (The Spruce).
Call an exterminator
Prior to move-in, you probably haven’t spent enough time in the house to get a view of any pests that may be lurking. Call an exterminator to take care of any mice, insects, and other critters that may be hiding in your home.
Familiarize Yourself with the Neighborhood
Once you’ve settled into your new home, take some time to explore your neighborhood. Familiarize yourself with local stores, restaurants, and services. You can also introduce yourself to your neighbors, who can offer helpful tips and insights about the area (HGTV).
Moving into a new home can be a daunting task, but prioritizing these must-do tasks will make the process smoother and less stressful. By setting up utilities, deep cleaning your new home, changing the locks, unpacking essentials first, and familiarizing yourself with the neighborhood, you’ll be well on your way to making your new house feel like a home.
